Why I Bought the Huvitz HRK-9000A Autorefractor/Keratometer
by Robert Gerowitz, OD, FIAO
In today’s Optometric practices, accurate pre-testing can make the difference between a smooth running schedule and one in which everything is up for grabs. Devices that technical staff can easily operate on every patient add into this formula as well. Lastly, instruments that produce data that is repeatable year after year is vital for the doctor’s assessment of patient status.
All these reasons and more are why I purchased the Huvitz HRK-9000A Autorefractor/Keratometer. With an Auto-Refraction feature that rivals retinoscopy, I am able to have a better starting point in which to begin my subjective refraction. Patient lens testing goes easier and faster, thus reducing the inherent frustration some people may feel.

Contact lens fitting guide
In our practice, many patients opt for contact lenses. Often these are specialty designs which require dead-on K readings. The HRK-9000A not only provides repeatable Ks but also pupil and HVID measurements. For the new fitter, the Contact Lens Fitting Assistance Guide will be an invaluable resource. Best of all, the 9000A also does Peripheral K measurements that have been useful in Scleral lens design.

Meibography, meibomian glands
That’s a lot in such a small footprint, but I would be remiss not to mention this instrument’s most impressive new features: Meibography and Tear Break-Up Time measurement! Now in the same room that my patient pre-testing occurs, we can add in two key elements for Dry Eye assessment. By demonstrating to the patient how their meibomian glands look compared to normal photos, we are able to help them understand the root cause of their dry eye symptoms and initiate treatment faster.

Subjective VA Test – Glare Mode
I could go on and on discussing the HRK-9000A’s other features, like Contrast Sensitivity and Glare testing, Wavefront analysis, Auto Tracking of the patient’s eyes, and the Subjective VA test. These are all wrapped up in an intuitive device with a 7” color LCD display and wireless communication to my Huvitz Auto-Lensmeter and Digital Refractor. Why not take a test drive yourself and experience what a cutting edge practice needs!
